Jonell was born on January 25, 1947, in Sterling, IL, the daughter of Roy and Phyllis (Bleitz) Lumbard. She grew up in Erie, IL, where she attended and graduated from Erie High School. Jonell then continued her education at Augustana College where she earned her master's degree in music by the late 70's. One day, Jonell decided she was going to buy a dog from a shelter in Dixon. Little did she know that she would find the love of her life, Jim, while adopting a dog. It was love at first sight that continued for the next 27 years.
